PALMA
MAJORCA was recovering yesterday after a night of horrendous storms battered the island.
Over 400 bolts of lightning struck as homes and businesses battened down the hatches while the storm raged.
Strong winds of about 70 kilometres per hour were accompanied by rainfall measured at 11.5 litres per square metre at Palma's Porto Pi.
At the airport, over seven litres per square metre was registered.
Director of the Balearics Meteorological Centre Agusti Jansa said many areas had suffered localised flooding. “Five litres of rain fell in 10 minutes,” said Mr Jansa. “This is extremely heavy,” he added.
Areas worst affected were around Andratx and the Sierra de Tramuntana.
