By Humphrey Carter TWO men aged in their late 20s were arrested by the Guardia Civil yesterday in connection with 16 vehicles which were broken into and severely damaged in a Santa Ponsa council car park in the early hours of the morning. Vehicle owners were stunned as they went to get into their vehicles, parked near the football ground, to go to work yesterday morning. Apart from stereos, speakers, GPS systems and mobile phones having been ripped from the interior, front, side and rear windows had been smashed and seats slashed. The worst of the damage was done to a top-of-the-range Jaguar. The repair bill is estimated to be around 60'000 euros. But thousands of euros worth of damage was caused to the other vehicles which included a Ford Focus, a Volkswagen and three Hondas. The two suspects were caught after a Guardia Civil patrol surprised one as he was apparently breaking into a vehicle elsewhere in the resort. He tried to give the Guardia Civil the slip, but the patrol chased him through the resort and eventually caught him and his alleged accomplice. Angry vehicle owners, some of whom where unable to get to work, were yesterday pointing the finger at Calvia council. Some are holding the council partly responsible for failing to install the necessary security measures in the municipal car park. What is more, this is not the first time that vehicles in the car park have been targeted.
