THE Hotel Santa Monica in Avenida Europa, Arenal, was evacuated at midday on Sunday due to a fire which had started in the basement.
The hotel's staff raised the alarm, and the 112 emergency service despatched emergency teams to the scene. The hotel, which was open to the public, was evacuated in an orderly manner with no problems, and the tourists waited in the street while the firemen put out the blaze.

The fire damaged the building's industrial dryer, and caused a great amount of dense smoke which filled the basement area. Fire crews from Palma and the Majorcan Fire Brigade took part in the emergency, as the hotel is just on the border between Palma and the municipality of Llucmajor.

The Guardia Civil took charge of the investigations and the local police controlled the traffic so that the fire engines could get to the building without any problems.

The fire crews had to use breathing apparatus to enter the basement.
Fortunately the fire didn't spread and an hour later the hotel's clients were able to return to their rooms. The cause of the fire in the dryer has not been established, but everything points to the fact that it was accidental.
