THE number of people flying to and from the Islands during the first eight months of this year totalled more than 7.5 million, 17.8 percent of Spain's total air passenger volume.

The central government Ministry for Industry and Tourism reported yesterday that this figure reflects a growth of 0.1 percent on the same period last year. It also revealed that the Balearics registered top air passenger figures for Spain during the month of August this year with 1.7 million travellers in the region, 2.4 percent more than in 2007. Nevertheless, so-called “traditional” airlines carried a total of 3.1 million passengers in the first eight months, a 15 percent drop on 2007.
