MADRID CENTRAL Government confirmed yesterday that it will be funding a specialist service for women in the Balearics provided by 29 officers of the National Police force.

The service - manned by professionally trained staff - includes advice and guidance on integration and education for women who are from distinct cultures, many of whom have come to the Balearics as immigrants.

Responding to a Parliamentary question by Joan Fageda, Partido Popular Senator for the Balearic Islands, the Government said that 11 officers will be assigned to Ibiza, 5 to Minorca and the remainder to Majorca. A spokesman confirmed that funding to the tune of 4.1 million euros will be provided to support the “Servicios de Atención a la Mujer” (SAM) - Services for Women.

The Central Government support scheme operates at a national level and 141 million euros has been allocated to financing its integration aid programme. Proposals for nationwide help for women provided through the National Police service were first tabled in early March this year.

On Ibiza, SAM officers will operate out of the central police station in Ibiza town, and on Minorca out of Mahon.
On Majorca, the service will be provided at the Police Headquarters in Palma.
