PALMA AND CALVIA
THE sirens of the emergency vehicles continued to blaze around the island yesterday evening as Majorca recovered from the severe pasting it received by gale force winds and torrential rain in the early hours of yesterday morning.

One life was lost in the Port of Sant Elm when a yacht owner tried to save his boat which was being pulled adrift of its moorings by the heavy seas and elsewhere, scores of people spoke of lucky escapes as trees were brought down on to cars and gusts of over 120 kilometres per hour tossed pedestrians about.

The Port of Palma was closed for over two hours and shipping out of all Balearic ports was thrown into disarray. Some ferries which attempted to set sail were forced to turn back.
