STAFF REPORTER BETWEEN the beginning of January and the end of September this year, the port of Palma had been visited by more than 500 cruise ships carrying a total of over one million passengers - a further one hundred ships are expected by the time 2009 comes round.

The Balearic Ports Authority released a report yesterday as evidence of how the cruise sector of tourism in the region has been undergoing a boom period. In spite of the global credit crunch, the industry has grown by 6 percent in the Islands so far this year.
