ENGINE failure, errors in calculation and loss of the anchor are the chief causes of yachting accidents in the Balearics, according to Miguel Felix Chicón, head of the local maritime rescue service.
In the case of Ibiza and Formentera, most of the accidents occurred in the area known as Es Freus, between the two islands, because of the number of rocky islets and shallow water.
The most recent accident was the Magic Uno! which ran aground at Es Freus between the islets Es Penjats and Ses Illes Negres.
The causes, he said, were engine failure and human error.
