MORE than 420 delegates, from a total of 150 European regions, will meet today in the Pueblo Español in Palma for the Annual meeting of the Assembly of European Regions (ARE) which, on this occasion, will be dedicated to discussing globalisation. The director of ARE in Brussels, Joanna Benfield, presented the programme for the general assembly, which has as its title Global spirit - Regional action, in the offices of the Balearic Ministry of Economy and Innovation. Also taking part was the Balearic Minister of Labour and Training, Cristobal Huguet. The Minister highlighted the important work done by the islands since they had joined the Assembly in 1985, especially in everything related to tourism, by promoting the creation of various guides and specific studies about the sector. Huguet said it is important that all European Union countries take part in the Assembly, and commented that the voice of the regions will continue to be very important in Europe. The Balearic government will present a paper about migration and globalisation.
For her part, Benfield said that the main object of the ARE assembly is to analyse the factors which affect European citizens in a world which is increasingly interdependent.
