Palma.—The Minister made the comments in response to claims by the opposition PSOE Socialists that the health budget is at least 200 million euros too short to meet the medical needs of the Balearic population.

Castro said that 1'302 million euros has been set aside for health next year and she claims that the amount is enough for her ministry to provide the population with the health care it deserves.

The Minister said that cuts have obviously had to have been made and that the 518 million euros of out standing bills left behind by the former Socialist-led coalition government have not helped Ministry for Health's financial situation either.

But, Castro maintains that the health budget is “realistic”.
According to Castro, just over 35 percent of the total budget for 2012 is being invested in the health service and she promised that a major effort will be made to improve the high standards of social services and welfare in the Balearics.
