STAFF REPORTER ARRANGEMENTS for the Balearic government to enter into a co-management agreement at Palma airport could start by the end of this year, said regional President Francesc Antich yesterday.

Responding to a parliamentary question by the opposition Partido Popular (PP)about next year's tourist season, Antich said that the subject of power sharing had been broached by Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Luís Rodriguez Zapatero when he visited the island in August last year. During his stay, the Prime Minister reportedly gave a commitment that such an agreement between the Balearic government and Spain's National Airports Authority (AENA) “should enter its first phase.”

Speaking on forecasts for next year's tourist season, Antich said that it was too early to make predictions but he had been given confirmation by tour operators that the British and German markets were “picking up”.
