STAFF REPORTER BALEARIC government spokesman, Joana Barcelo, said yesterday that the regional authorities had discounted a lightning strike at a Majorcan power station as the key reason behind the blackout which left hundreds of thousands of people without power last week. “It would appear that a lightning strike was not the cause of the blackout, it's virtually discounted,” she asserted at a Press briefing following a government meeting in Palma.

Barcelo added however, that the inquiry opened by the government into exactly why the Es Murterar power station in Alcudia left 900'000 people in the dark on 13th November is still ongoing and as a result, there is still no definitive explanation about what went wrong.
