Palma.—As the economic crisis continues to bite, not only will there be little Christmas spirit on the high streets again this year, there will be even less behind the shop counters.

According to the results of a survey of the retail sector released yesterday, there will be few seasonal jobs on offer this Christmas.
Pre-crisis, during the months of November, December and January, the retail sector would enlarge its workforce by between 30 and 40 percent in order to handle the increase in demand.

However, last year, the workforce was increased by only five to 15 percent with a mere 650 seasonal jobs being offered across the Balearics.
There will be a rise in demand for cashiers and sales people in some of the larger stores as well as in the restaurant sector, but on the whole, most retailers are going to freeze their workforce and not take on any extra staff for the festive period.
