STAFF REPORTER HAULAGE contractors in Soller and Fornalutx agreed yesterday to ask the Balearic government to give “full support” to them by not cutting the discounts currently made available to them for heavy goods vehicle use of the Soller tunnel.

Miquel Soler, President of the Soller Valley Freight Hauliers and Vice-President of the Balearic Transport Federation (FEBT) called a meeting yesterday at the head offices of the Balearic Business Confederation (CAEB) in Palma.

Soler said the aim of the meeting, attended by some 50 professionals, had been to agree consensus on how the government should be lobbied to maintain the tunnel toll subsidy. If it were cut, Soler said, hauliers would be paying four times the price demanded of them at the moment.

A meeting to further the issue has been arranged for today with Transport Director, Antoni Verger. Drivers are angry that the company which has control of the Soller tunnel toll has without consultation decided to alter the prerequisites for being eligible for discounts.

All companies, including those based in the Soller valley have been earmarked to lose them.
