THE Balearic government made it known yesterday that it is in favour of taking the stricken fuel container vessel the Don Pedro out of Ibizan coastal waters where it sunk in July last year as long as “there are no further environmental risks”.

The government is still, however, awaiting expert advice, and plans to make an informed decision in conjunction with other organisations who will be involved in the operation. A spokesman said that it is important the right decision is made and not rushed with an emphasis placed on what is best for the environment, and not on cost. A Parliamentary Institutional Affairs Committee said yesterday that the Don Pedro was suffering from “structural problems” and ran the risk of breaking up with consequent further damage to the marine eco-system.
