STAFF REPORTER THE Balearic government is to provide a further 100'000 euros worth of subsidies to bolster the car sales industry in the islands, said spokeswoman Joana Barcelo yesterday.

Earlier this year, as part of a strategy to help dealerships in the region move stock which was building up unsold in their showrooms, Central Government had launched its Plan 2000E. Through collaboration with the vehicle manufacturer and regional government, the aid package meant that the purchase of a new car could be subsidised to the tune of 2'000 euros. When the time for the promotion came to an end, there were still many purchases which were under way but not complete, said Barcelo, so the extra money announced yesterday is to subsidise those infinished applications. With this added amount, she said, the Balearic government will have underpinned new car purchase to the tune of 1.9 million euros.
