Palma.—Palma Local Police carried out their first ever daytime spot checks yesterday to test drivers for drugs.
Until now, the drug tests have been carried out at night, but yesterday it was the first time they have been mounted during the day.
First thing yesterday morning, the Local Police threw up their checkpoints near sa Porta de San Antoni.
According to Inspector Jaume Pla, who was in command of yesterday's one-hour operation, the methods the police are using to test drivers for drugs are 100 percent reliable.

And, of the 17 drivers stopped and checked, two apparently tested positive for drugs, cocaine and methadone respectively.
The police also took the opportunity to check the paper work of all the vehicle stopped.
Six traffic fines were handed out and one vehicle was seized by the authorities.
The Chief of the Local Police, Antoni Vera, monitored the operation and he hailed the great advances which have been made in drug and alcohol detection devices and praised the one his force is using for being so reliable.

The fine for driving under the influence of drugs is 500 euros and, should a driver refuse to submit to the test, he or she will be immediately arrested. The drug tests can detect traces of drugs consumed in the last ten to twelve hours.
