STAFF REPORTER ELECTRICITY supply company Endesa has started building a new pump which will mean that soon 12 local buses will be gas-fired thereby lowering pollution in Palma The buses belong to the city's municipal public transport company, EMT, and will come into service at the end of the year. Endesa has been awarded the two-year contract for supplying natural gas to the fleet. According to Endesa, the installation is the first of its kind on Majorca following the completion of a major engineering project which has piped natural gas to the island.

The power supply company has highlighted the fact that the new fuel allows vehicles to operate without polluting the atmosphere to the extent that they do when using carbon-based fuels.

Endesa said that in the future, taxi cabs and delivery vehicles could be using natural gas as an alternative to petrol or diesel, with the resultant reduction in CO2 contamination and noise levels.
