THE airport debate organised by the association Europeos por España, Europeans for Spain, on Wednesday night raised a wide range of issues, most of them put forward by members of the 80-strong audience.
The public meeting was addressed by the Director of Palma airport, Nemesio Suarez and the Managing Director of Air Berlin, Alvaro Middelmann, whose airline currently does not operate any flights between the Balearics and the UK. The audience included representatives from all the various sectors of the tourist industry and members of the general public and two of the main concerns was firstly, the lack of winter flights from the UK and also the apparent lack of interest by the local authorities to generate winter tourism. There were also calls for Palma, for example, to be open properly on the weekend to attract winter tourism.
