—Mallorca Cricket Club held a double celebration on Saturday as the merged their traditional Christmas bash with a lunch to acknowledge 25 years of cricket on the island. Club members and friends gathered at Mood Restaurant Costa del Blanes to enjoy an afternoon of festive fun, fine food……and for many, a wander down memory lane. For it was in the "old" car-park at this venue alongside "Tenis Playa," that the club used as its very first cricket pitch.

However, there was a surprise in store for MCC Chairman Paul Heaton, as one of the original group of players Paul has given long and loyal service to the club. Still a fine cricketer, and arguably the club’s best ever fielder, Paul has for years acted as the club´s groundsman, handyman, and general "go to" person when something needed doing! Next year Paul Heaton is to stand down as Chairman of the club and has indicated that after twenty five years he will be taking a well-earned rest from his duties. To celebrate Paul’s commitment to the club he was presented with an inscribed Claret Jug by Majorca Daily Bulletin Editor Jason Moore on behalf of all island based cricketers both past and present. In total, there were five men and women in attendance who "in" at the very beginning of Mallorca Cricket Club and there was much talk of how the club has grown and developed over the past 25 years. The "originals" were as follows……..Paul Heaton, Malcolm Leggett, Wendy Peters, Eric George and Hijazy Yaseen. At the end of lunch club members were reminded that it was Mallorca Cricket Club’s turn in 2013 to host the Balearic Cup and to strive to regain that trophy after losing it to Ibiza in at the last tournament in Menorca. The fixture list for next season is building nicely and the club has some fine young players in its ranks that play good aggressive cricket. The future looks positive, but as always there is much to do behind the scenes. Until next season boys!
