PALMA OPPOSITION Partido Popular spokesman Antoni Serra claimed angrily yesterday that viewing numbers for the local Balearic television station IB3 had dropped because the public preferred to watch TV3 channel instead of what he described as a “copy” of a Catalan channel.

It is an irony, said Serra, that the new IB3 management are now repeating a situation which during the term of office of the previous Partido Popular government in the Islands, was much criticised by the Socialists who are now in power. Serra claimed that the “power behind the throne” in IB3 management was the Unio Mallorquina party meaning that the “impartial” integrity of broadcasting could not be sustained. He said that the channel's current director has not been approved by Parliament which had been demanded by the ruling Socialists.
