SOME 40 percent of hotels operating in the Balearics are strictly speaking “illegal” as they fail to conform to current planning legislation, said the regional Hotel Chain Association (ACH) yesterday.

Aurelio Vazquez, ACH President, explained that in some cases the situation of “illegal” hotels has arisen because there has been improvement or extension works on the premises in the past which do not meet the demands of updated bylaws.

Vazquez said that the ACH believes the situation is unsustainable. If the tourist industry in the Balearics is to undergo a major overhaul to make sure it is competitive, we won't be able to match the offer of other holiday destinations who have “done their homework,” he claimed.
