The opposition Socialists in Madrid warned yesterday that a government  pardon for the former Balearic President would spark a public outcry.

Palma.—As the Bulletin reported yesterday, the former Partido Popular president of the Balearics and Spanish Minister for the Environment, Jaume Matas has  pleaded for a pardon from central government in his latest attempt to avoid serving a nine month jail term.
Matas had initially appealed to the Palma High Court to over rule the jail term and fine him instead.
However, on Monday, the High Court over ruled the appeal and now Matas, who would have  otherwise had five days to present himself  at Palma prison, has turned to the Partido Popular government in Madrid for help.
