PALMA
THE Mayor of Alcudia, Miguel Ferrer, was last night confirmed as the new Balearic Minister for Tourism.
Ferrer, former Secretary General of the Majorca Unionist Party, will succeed Miguel Angel Nadal who resigned last week after being implicated in an alleged case of misappropriation of public funds.

The Mayor of Alcudia was put forward by the UM chief executive after a meeting yesterday lunch time and was the preferred choice of the Balearic President and his cabinet over Francesc Buils, the Minister for Tourism who stepped down to pave the way for Nadal to take up the highly coveted and important position.

Antich said last night that he hopes the decision to appoint Ferrer will return some stability to the coalition government which has been rocked by political infighting and the corruption scandals.

The Balearic President also said that Ferrer is ideal for the job in view of his experience as mayor of “one of the largest and most important holiday destinations in the Balearics.” Antich also said that he sincerely hopes this is the final time there is a change of Minister for Tourism in this current legislature.
Ferrer becomes the third member of the Majorca Unionist Party to have held the job since the coalition returned to power at the last elections two-and-a-half years ago.
