PALMA City Councillor for Infrastructure, Francisco Donate said yesterday that City Hall is planning to completely resurface Parc de la Mar, the area round the lake in front of the Cathedral, over a two year period running through 2009 and 2010.

The project, which will cost a total of nearly three million euros, will replace the current hewn stone with imitation slabs. Also upgraded will be the water and electric systems, and lighting. The first phase of the programme, costing 1.3 million euros will begin in the coming Spring and will be finished by the end of 2009. The section which is going to be renewed first is the area closest to Avenida Antoni Maura which runs down from Plaza de la Reina to the Old Wharf. The Parc de la Mar, with its splendid backdrop of Palma Cathedral, the Almudaina Palace and the city's historic centre, is not just an area for tourists.
