Calvia.—The Chairman of ESRA South West, David Barter, presented a cheque for €500, on behalf of the branch, to Carmen Crespo of the Asociacion Sindroma de Down Baleares at a coffee-morning in Wellies, Portals on Thursday.

The English Speaking Residents Association has always been sensitive to the needs of charitable organisations on the island, and the South West branch has been at the forefront in providing help, particularly at Christmas time.

This year, the South West Branch of ESRA decided to donate to 5 charities - €500 to each of four charities from its own funds and the proceeds from its Christmas raffle to a fifth. Already, one cheque for €500 has been presented to DIME – the Asociacion de Voluntarios de Cuidadas Paliativos de las Islas Baleares – which provides palliative care to cancer sufferers.

And the second cheque was passed to the Downs Syndrome Association on Thursday morning. In the near future, ESRA South West expects to donate to the Salvation Army, and to organisations dealing with Parkinson's Disease and Cystic Fibrosis.
