STAFF REPORTER THE recession has meant that there will be no rush to open up new hypermarkets and department stores in the Balearics just yet, the National Association of Large Traders (Anged) said yesterday.

Bartomeu Sitjar, Anged's delegate in the Balearics said that “at the moment, no one is interested in investing because of the economic crisis,” adding that the situation was probably going to extend well into next year.

Sitjar claimed that he hadn't “heard anything at all” about the opening on Majorca of a Mediamarkt centre which specialises in computing and household electrical goods. “It's possible that the company may be carrying out feasibility studies with a view to business in 2011,” he suggested. Sitjar explained that although the law governing large trading centres such as hypermarkets and department stores has been passed by the Balearic Parliament, it still hasn't appeared in the Official Bulletin of the Balearic Islands (BOIB).
