THE President of Gesa Endesa, Bartomeu Reus, proposed yesterday building on the 20 percent of the Balearics which are not legally protected.
He discarded the advisability of establishing “population ceilings”.
Reus called the conference “Current and future perspectives for the energy sector”. It was organised by the consultants Price Waterhouse Coopers.
In a day dedicated to analysis of the Balearic economic situation he said that “a very limited vision had been imposed” which jepoardised the future of the islands. The President of Gesa explained during the conference, and in statements afterwards, that the economic growth of the Balearics will be based in the coming years on the demand for housing and building, not on tourism. He underlined that it is necessary to reflect “without fear” on the convenience of maintaining the vision imposed by the heart of Balearic society to “strictly preserve land”. Also, he proposed to “play in an ambitious manner” with the 20 percent of ground which is not protected or set aside for agricultural use, to dedicate it to housing and “raise the penalty” which hangs over golf course and sports complexes. He added that the impact of economic activity in the Balearics isn't about the environment but about the landscape.
