THE gas pipe connection with the Balearics will reduce the annual CO2 emissions by approximately 17 percent.
Some 9.5 million tonnes of CO2 is emitted every year, so this will mean a decrease in the excess of these gases emitted by the islands, in keeping with the Kyoto Protocol objectives. The Balearic Minister for the Environment, Jaume Font, announced the figures yesterday during the presentation of a Government campaign which the power company Gesa will carry out to make citizens aware of the importance of fighting climate change. They will do this via recommendations on energy saving distributed with their bills. According to the figures announced, which are based on studies done in 2005, the Balearics exceeds the Kyoto objectives by 2.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gases, and the gas supplied by the pipe will reduce this quantity by 1'680'000 tonnes annually. Font said that with this reduction in the excess of emissions due to the gas pipe, remaining emissions can be reduced by working directly with the public and companies to advise them how to reduce the emissions.
