FOUR people were injured yesterday, two of them seriously in a five-vehicle pile-up in front of the old GESA building along the Paseo Maritimo in Palma.

The crash happened at about 3pm when, for reasons yet to be confirmed, a 73-year-old man driving down the Paseo Maritimo with his wife in the passenger seat suddenly lost control of his vehicle and crossed the central reservation into the path of four oncoming vehicles.

Local Police, Guardia Civil, Palma fire fighters and a number of ambulances attended the scene.
The 73-year-old and his wife suffered serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.
Drivers in two of the other vehicles involved in the crash sustained multiple injuries and were taken to two different clinics in Palma but their injuries were not found to be life threatening.

The accident was the cause of major tailbacks along both directions of the Paseo Maritimo. Local Police got traffic moving again swiftly.
Investigations are continuing into what circumstances had caused the accident.
