In the space of five years, between the last few months of 2008 and 2013, the Balearics lost over 8 percent of self employed workers. There are now only 32,800 self employed workers compared with the 35,700 of 2008. The decline throughout the country is worrying and estimated to be around 25%. The price to pay to be self employed has recently come under scrutiny, with citizens complaining its extremely hard to set up a business given the amount of fees and barriers set by the government.
