Extra steps are going to be taken by the authorities to crack down on illegal taxi drivers operating in and out of Palma airport.

Palma.—A number of pirate cabbies have already been caught this season sparking  protests by angry taxi drivers which ended with clashes with the security services and left hundreds of holiday makers stranded at the airport.
However, the authorities are taking the problem extremely seriously and, this season extra inspectors are going to be deployed to the airport to check that those taxi drivers operating in and out of the airport are fully legal.
Last summer, for example, 108 controls were carried out during the tourist season at the airport and 1,721 vehicles inspected.
But, even when the pirate cabbies are caught, it is often difficult to prosecute and fine them because they argue that they are either picking up or dropping off friends or family members.
By law, unless arriving or departing passengers have a coach transfer booked, the only other official means of transport are the EMT airport bus or a taxi, unless they are being collected or dropped off by legitimate friends and family.
