Two men were in police custody yesterday after being arrested in connection with a wave of assaults on elderly women aged between 80 and 90 in the centre  of Palma.

Palma.—The two men, brothers who arrived in Majorca from Murcia on the mainland just over a month ago, have been arrested under the suspicion of having  assaulted and mugged at least ten women aged between 80 and 90.
According to the National Police, who carried out the arrests, the crimes were committed in and around calle Blanquerna and  Arxiduc Lluis Salvador.
The two men, aged 22 and 28 respectively,  would either assault their victims at the entrance to the blocks of apartments in which they lived or inside their actual homes.
The brothers, who both have criminal records, would then batter the women, in some cases stuff paper into their mounts, and strip them of all the jewellry  they were wearing and other personal items. The National Police opened its investigation after recognising a similarity between a number of assaults such as the modus operandi and victims targeted.
