FOR many years we held the Calvia Town Hall Christmas Fair in Puerto Portals Boulevard (I know that we are nowhere near Christmas yet, but there is a point to this). Every year in about October time, I would go down to the offices at Capitanía, in the Captain’s tower, and meet Capitan Eraso.

He was everything one would expect a Capitan to be, dressed immaculately in white, with a tan and a shock of white hair. he had a character that could be stern, but there was always a twinkle in his eye too.

We would discuss the Christmas fair stalls, and he would say to me "no oil on my new Boulevard tiles" in other words, I always had to tell the hot doughnut man, and the hog roast man, to put something protective down, as his tiles were new and he was quite rightly very keen to keep them that way.

Two years ago, sadly, El Capitano passed away, and as the replacement Captain started having his own Christmas fair in the Port, we had to relocate.

As you know we have been, for the last two years, in Santa Ponsa, but this year we are having a two day seasonal fest in Palmanova, at the seafront. Back to El Capitano.

This week we had the honour of unveiling a plaque, in his name, in one of the squares of Capdella village, where he lived with his wife and young kids. It was really emotional, as Mayor Manu pulled back the little curtain, to see his name there.

As his wife and children looked on tearfully, we all applauded, in memory of a very special man. he will be fondly remembered.

Y nephew, his partner, and 6 year old little boy, Ryan, along with our new family addition, 13 week old, baby Poppy, came to see me for their summer holidays. It was a good reason to take some time out. I always love to see our island with what I call " holiday eyes" if you know what I mean, it makes you stop and appreciate everything we have here.

Top of young Ryan’s " holiday wish list" were :

To see my spotty dog Luna

The go on some of the slides at

Western Waterpark

To see the new soft play, and

Katlantis at House of Katmandu

To eat coconut ice cream from the "coconut shell".

All well and good, and easy to deliver, needless to say we did all of those things and more. Top of his Mum and Dad’s list were :

To get a bit of a tan (not easy when you are keeping two little ones in the shade )

To enjoy a "proper" Paella

In my nephew’s case....to have a large

cocktail and an "awesome"

cheeseburger at Francesco’s beach

bar, Cala Viñas.

To drive out and about and see new

places.

Once again, we did all of that and more. Baby Poppy of course was content to be splashing around with Daddy in the baby pool, or sitting in her buggy in the shade with me, covered in factor 50 sun cream, and drinking cool water.

The best laugh of all, is that, as she is very dark skinned, Poppy had the best tan of all, and she wasn’t even in the sun. And so the holiday came to an end. They had a fabulous time, and yes it did bring it home to me that on this island there is something for everyone.

Despite some of the goings on in other areas, it is an diverse island that can provide the perfect holiday destination, for you, whatever you are looking for.

My family LOVED it, and I can’t wait for them to come back.

HE International Department has been really busy with the run up to the deadline for paying property rates. Although the department across the road from the Town Hall ( recaudación ) is the place to make payment, of course so many people need help and come to get my girls Sally and Marta to guide then through it.

Rates are payable over a two month window, to give flexibility to the general public. As time flies so fast I thought it prudent to give you yet another reminder that the end of this month is the deadline.

Delayed payment results in extra money being applied to the bill, so don’t get caught out.

Sally and Marta can be contacted on 971 139184/5.

T
