Calvia.—The former chief of Calvia police was released from prison yesterday. Jose Antonio Navarro has been in prison on remand since 1 September after being arrested on claims that he exorted money from Magalluf business owners in return for “favours” and “preferential treatment.” Navarro denies the charges. Three other policemen, including the Chief of Police of Marratxi who also lives in Calvia and had served with the Calvia force, have also been questioned by officers investigating the case.
A court spokesperson said yesterday that Navarro had been released on remand as police officers continue to investigate the case. His arrest followed a summer of controversy in Magalluf in which the President of the Balearic government slammed the resort´s Punta Ballena as the “street of shame.”
