THE “No” campaign in the Scottish referendum said that the country would be isolated from the rest of Europe if they voted Yes to independence. Well Scotland voted No but they are isolated from their favourite holiday spot. Majorca! Yesterday, Idid a quick internet search and discovered that there are no direct flights between Scotland and Majorca during the winter. This is amazing considering that many resorts on the island have a distinct Scottish flavour and there are hundreds of Scottish Majorca holiday home owners. One Scottish resident contacted me yesterday and said that easyJet had been maintaining a regular winter link with Majorca but this year it had been cancelled. He claimed that it was both popular with Scots and people living in the north of England. The airlines have infact scored an own goal, because not only are Scots not coming to the island, Majorcans planning a holiday in Scotland can´t get there either. I know plenty of Majorcans who are always telling me that they would love to go to Scotland...but sorry not in the winter! This flight situation has got to be resolved and soon. German tourists are coming to the island during the winter and they do have flights. So why can´t the British? Why is it that the Germans think Majorca is an ideal winter destination and the Brits don´t? It is an amazing state of affairs considering that the Balearics are Britain´s top holiday spot...but only in the summer.
