Sa Pobla’s Partido Popular council yesterday approved the plan to extend the opening hours of large superstores in the municipality, arguing that the measure is set to attract more visitors to the area.
Nonetheless, the decision was not well received by opposition parties, who defend small and medium businesses in the area which they claim will suffer. One opposition party representative argued that “the amount of visitors to the area does not justify the extension of opening hours for stores over 300 square metres in size.”
“Maybe if those shops open on Sundays it will attract more visitors, but what’s more likely to happen is that small shop owners will lose trade.”
