A 65-year-old man was in a serious condition in hospital last night after having shot himself  while hiding in a Son Ferrer bar yesterday morning. The victim apparently hid in the terrace of  a bar in Son Ferrer, Calvia, which is owned by his ex-wife, armed with a sawn-off shotgun, for which he has  an arms license,  just after 9.30a.m.
According to the Guardia Civil, who are handling the investigation, the man had been roaming the area round the bar called Cabanon-1 for a few hours, waiting for the cafe to open.
However, it appears that the ex-wife spotted the 65-year-old inside the covered terrace of the bar as she arrived for work and, due to the reportedly extremely tense relation between the two, she hid in a doorway and called the police.
The couple had apparently split up a year ago  and, according to sources close to the investigation, although there is no history of domestic violence, he had allegedly threatened to kill his ex-wife last week and the rest of her family were deeply concerned that he may just revert to some form of violent action.
However, despite claims from some neighbours, the 65-year-old had not been issued with a restraining order.
Nevertheless, a  number of neighbours  also reported having spotted an armed man hiding in the terrace of the bar. As many as 50 armed members of the Guardia Civil with support from the Local Police and the 112 emergency service rushed to the scene where, for a brief moment, there was a stand off with the 65-year-old inside and the armed police having surrounded and secured the area outside.
The commotion attracted a great deal of interest from local residents but officers made sure that the general public were kept as far away as possible for safety reasons.
