The British manager of the Driving Mallorca car club died on Sunday when the Ford Cobra Classic sports car he was a passenger in hit a wall on the Llucmajor motorway.
Russell Stevens, 53, was well known and respected within the classic car community on the island and his death has come as a major shock.
The 66-year-old driver of the Ford Cobra is in hospital undergoing treatment. Yesterday, the Guardia Civil Traffic Department launched a full investigation into the tragic accident.
Russell Stevens moved to the island about seven years ago after a successful career in publishing in Britain. He quickly became involved in the classic car scene on the island and was one of the instigators of the Wednesday meeting of classic cars at the Boat House on Palma´s Paseo Maritimo. He had also started writing for the Bulletin, producing a “Car of the Week” feature after the car club meeting on Wednesday. His close family will be flying to the island from Britain and France this week and the Bulletin will publish details of the funeral time and place when they are confirmed. Russell Stephens was a great character with plenty of friends on the island and he will be sadly missed by all.
