A report from the consultancy group DBK, which provides these figures, suggests that the Spanish car-rental sector as a whole is set to grow by up to 5% this year, with turnover exceeding 1,400 million euros, thanks to a recovery in leisure travel by the national Spanish tourism market and the dynamism of foreign tourism. In 2014, the figure was 1,340 million, which itself represented a 4.3% increase over 2013.
Revenue from foreign tourists accounted for 41% of the total market (a rise of 8%), while 24% came from domestic tourism. The remaining 35% was from businesses: a growth of 1.5%. In 2014 there was a total fleet of 250,000 vehicles, an increase of 2.5%, with 2,084 companies in Spain renting out cars and other vehicles. DBK believes that with favourable signs for tourism and an improving economic situation new growth in demand can be expected.
The Balearics is the region of Spain, along with the Canaries, which contributes the second highest number of car-rental agencies: 13% of the total in both regions. Andalusia takes the top spot with 18%.
