The town hall in Soller has asked the regional government to support the creation of a marine reserve off the coast of the town and to therefore continue efforts started by the previous government.

The request was passed to the minister for the environment and fisheries, Vicenç Vidal, during an official government visit, and it adds to a similar request made by the Oceana marine conservation organisation.

Locally, the idea for a reserve was initially that of the yacht club in Soller, and the area's fishing industry has also lent it its qualified backing. President of the fishermen's collective, Josep Mayol, argues that the reserve should not be limited to the area right by Soller but be much wider and spread at least as far as Punta Beca, Pollensa, in order to guarantee a replenishment of fish stocks.
