DGT, the Traffic directorate, has installed cameras on motorways (and possibly other roads), which record all number plates, regardless of whether any offence is being committed. Primarily, these cameras are checking for vehicles without insurance or a valid MOT (ITV, to give it the local acronym). The cameras, it is said, are producing a whole load of fines and just as many complaints from motorists.

One of the points where these cameras have been placed is behind a large road sign on the Inca motorway by the exit for Consell and Alaro. The cameras process thousands of number plates and the information system then generates notices of fines.

Motorists have been contacting the Guardia Civil, complaining of what they think is an internet scam, as they are unaware of having committed any infraction. The Guardia says that it is not a measure that it has adopted but one specifically by the DGT.

The cameras on the Inca motorway are, it is understood, not the only ones: there are others that are likewise hidden by road signs on other roads.
