Driver leaps to safety to avoid being crushed after accident

The incident occurred at around 9am when the driver of a VW Golf was involved in a minor collision with a Hyundai people carrier. No serious damage was done, but the two drivers pulled onto the hard shoulder to exchange insurance details.

Moments later a tow truck arrived to remove the Golf and began to winch the Golf on to the platform. At that moment, the driver of the tow truck was in his cabin and, through his rear view mirror spotted a van, apparently out of control and travelling at great speed, heading straight for them.

He managed to brace himself inside his cabin while the driver of the Golf, who was still on the motorway, managed to jump out of the way just seconds before the van careered into his vehicle, totally wrecking it. The impact was so fierce that the VW engine ended up embedded into the platform of the tow truck.
