Some homes and businesses in Majorca yesterday had power cuts for up to almost half an hour. This was due to a fault with the Red Electrica cable that connects Majorca (and Minorca, which was also affected) to the mainland. The company says that it doesn't know what caused the power cut and is investigating. It is understood, though, that work was being done to the cable.

Power was first lost at 17.29 and began to be restored after eight minutes; complete service was back after 27 minutes. Almost 57,000 properties were affected.

Distribution of the cut was variable. In Alcudia, for instance, power went off in part of the main tourist centre but neighbouring parts were unaffected.
