Domestic violence. It is a very serious problem. The United Nations estimates that more than one in three women (35 per cent) worldwide have suffered either physical or sexual intimate partner violence at some point in their lives. However, other national studies show that up to 70 per cent of women have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Did you know that even here in our beautiful north end of the island - Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia - not a day passes without the police needing to help victims of domestic violence? It’s true. Just within the last two years, two women were actually killed by their partners right here where we live.

To help raise money and awareness, the North Mallorcan Branch of Lions International, with the support of Pollensa town hall, Institut Balear de la Dona, and ONIT, are having a Day Against Domestic Violence on Sunday, 21 May from 10am to 3pm. The mayor of Pollensa, Miquel Àngel March, will be opening the event.

The event will be at the Sant Domingo Cloister in Pollensa.  In addition to abuse awareness education, there will be raffles, an art sale, face and nail painting, stories for children, games, homemade cakes, paella, bucks fizz, beer, soft drinks and live music (five different groups in all). Lots of prizes! And admission is free.

We are asking people who come to wear something purple. Teal and purple are the colours of the Domestic Abuse ribbon. We’re also looking for donations. If you have any unopened bottles, bric-a-brac or children’s toys please consider donating them to us; no clothes, please. If you want to make a cake or some savouries, we would welcome these as well.

If you think there is anything else that you would like to donate, then please contact us. If you want to help us on the day - 21 May - we would love you to be there. The cloister will be open between 9am and 5pm on Friday to set up for the event and to receive donations. These can also be made from 9am on Sunday.
