Are the roads getting congested earlier in the year? | Jaume Morey

It would seem that Majorca's main roads are already congested even though it is only April. The Council of Majorca's land and infrastructure councillor, Mercedes Garrido, says that there aren't as yet any verifiable figures for traffic volume but she believes that they have increased.

But is early-season congestion an island-wide issue? Two episodes over recent days on the motorway between Palma and Andratx highlighted traffic volumes. One, on Monday, was the result of road works that required the closure of one lane, the other was on Friday when there was an accident. On both occasions there were tailbacks of several kilometres.

Nevertheless, Garrido seems convinced that jams are occurring at least a month earlier than last year. She points out that, where Palma is concerned, the Via Conectora road will help to alleviate traffic congestions, but stresses that the real way to lessen the congestion is by using public transport.

Car parks being created on Palma's outskirts should, she hopes, prove to be an incentive for greater public transport use. These car parks, Garrido says, should be one of the measures included in the regional government's transport and mobility plan for the whole island. The Council of Majorca, meanwhile, is working with Palma town hall in drafting a mobility plan for the metropolitan area.
