The resident population of the Balearics as of 1 January this year was 1,128,139. The population increased over the preceding twelve months by 12,140 (1.1%). In relative terms, rises in the Balearics and the Madrid region were the highest in the country.

The Balearic Islands had the highest proportion of foreign residents - 17.1% equating to 192,412 people. There was a 2.9% increase in foreign residents.

The Balearic region is one with the lowest number of municipalities with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants. There are six. Of the 67 in total, 37 have between 1,001 and 10,000 inhabitants, 23 are between 10,001 and 50,000, and there is one (Palma) with more than 100,000.

Nationally, the population on 1 January was 46,698,569, a rise of 0.3% (126,437 people). This is the first increase for five years. During 2017, the number of Spaniards decreased by 20,174, but foreign residents went up by 146,611.
