A Change.org petition demanding tougher penalties for drunk drivers who cause fatal accidents has raised 125,000 signatures. The petition was launched by the family of Paula Fornés, the fifteen-year-old girl who was killed by a drunk driver in Sa Rapita in the early hours of 24 June.

Paula’s aunt, Ana Rodríguez, says: “We are not seeking revenge. We only want that there be measures to prevent more cases such as Paula’s. We cannot do anything to bring her back. But we can change the law.”

The petition is to be sent to the justice commission at Congress in Madrid. Reform of the penal code as it relates to this type of offence (which includes driving under the influence of drugs) is currently being considered. At present, the maximum sentence is four years.

The tariff could be raised to nine years, although there is also a proposal for six.
