A major operation involving the German police and the Guardia Civil's criminal police was carried out in Palma on Wednesday.

Eight addresses in the city and elsewhere in Mallorca were raided, while there were simultaneous police operations in certain other European cities. These stemmed from investigations by the Prosecutor's Office in Palma and by German police into a massive international fraud. This is said to involve tens of millions of euros, with victims including people in Mallorca - wealthy German citizens in particular.

The precise nature of the fraud has yet to be explained, but it is understood to have been online and with various websites used to deceive victims. Lasting several months, the fraud has been perpetrated in a number of countries.

Among addresses raided and searched in Palma were law firms. The operation covered different parts of the city, including the Paseo Mallorca. Five arrests have been made so far.
