The president of the PP in Palma, Jaime Martínez, has pointed out that it is not only this party that is against this project, given that “Hila, the Federation of Neighbours, the Historical Centre Commission and the architects do not like the project either”.
Martínez also criticised the lack of coordination between administrations and ruled out that this project will solve Palma’s transport problems.
“The tram will make little or no difference to the city’s traffic problems. 4,000 parking spaces will be lost without a solution, trees will be cut down, most of which date back to before 1940, and the single platform sections will cause areas like El Molinar to collapse,” he said today.
Martínez pointed out that the priority for the City Council should be to improve the service offered by the EMT public bus service and to electrify 100% of the fleet.

Zoltan TeglasBecause it's approved des not means it will happen. Morgan Williams idea makes far more sense, in my view. There are more places on the island that needs better transport system than just Palma.
Politicians of all stripes tend to think in terms of what gets them elected or keeps them elected. That often means simply opposing the "other" parties in competition for the election, rather than what makes good sense. I've never had the impression that this tram proposal was a "great" idea. Yes, there is a substantial need for easy, fast transport links from the airport. But for the cost of this project and considering its drawbacks (it won't be any easier or quicker than existing bus transport), it occurs to me that it might make more sense to connect the airport to the existing rail lines to Inca, sa pobla, manacor et al, which inherently provides direct link to Palma. They could connect to somewhere like Es Pont de Inca or Marratxi, probably for similar money and less disruption. And extending the Manacor line to Son Servera and Arta and Capdepera would be a huge improvement. The lines and train stations are already in place, just waiting for the rails. Further, extend from Sa Pobla to Alcudia and the port. Then a tram line running the coast from Port de Pollença to Alcudia and eventually on to Colonia de Sant Pere would serve most of the popular tourist resorts in the North. Finally, if you really want to reduce traffic, there needs to be some thought about a line from the airport to Campos, Ses Salinas, Santanyi, and perhaps beyond to Cala d'Or. It could be an extension of the airport line from Palma/Inca. Big improvement just waiting to happen there. But they'd have to think in terms of 30 years rather than the next election cycle.
Peter PerfectIt won't be if the right wing are voted in as they are against any form of progress, clean energy or transport. But if the present lot get voted back in it will happen. The finance has already been approved.
Never going to be built, I think we all know that.
